As you may have realized by now, I am a KENTUCKY girl! My mother and her family are natives of Frankfort, Kentucky (State Capital) so naturally it’s close to my heart. The Kentucky Derby in Louisville is one of my favorite events of the year. Growing up, we spent many days in the spring & fall at the horse track. Keeneland Race Track located in Lexington, KY holds so many special memories for me.
If you are reading this and are not from Kentucky then you probably know very little about the Kentucky Derby :: well let me enlighten you!
Established in 1875, the Kentucky Derby is an annual event held on the first Saturday of May.
It is hosted at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY & is known as“The Most Exciting 2 Minutes In Sports”.
“Run for the Roses” is another expression used to describe the Derby referring to the blanket of roses draped over the winning horses’ back. the Rose holds the title of the race’s official flower.
The Kentucky Derby is the fist leg of the Triple Crown followed by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
There are multiple races leading up to the derby on the day of the event.
Since this is one of my most loved days of the year, it’s only right that I have a stylized shoot in honor of it. I would have had a Derby Themed Party myself, but Wedding Season calls.
I am an admirer of good Kentucky Whiskey so instinctively the “Mint Julip” is a must for me, making it the focal point of this shoot! The Mint Julip is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby ~ && it's sooooo delicious!!!
Want to try one out for yourself? See recipe below
KENTUCKY DERBY MINT JULIP
2oz. your favorite Whiskey/Bourbon (OR the Kentucky Derby choice of Woodford Reserve)
1 tsp Powdered Sugar or Simple Syrup
3 Fresh Mint Leaves – (Don’t be scared to use this first and give it a nice rub in the bottom of your glass)
2 tsp Water
Gently muddle Mint, Sugar, & Water, fill with ice, add Whiskey Bourbon & stir well. Garnish with mint sprig.
Along with Mint Julips, The Pink Pineapple Bakery worked with us on some delicious treats!!! They created yummy, jockey inspired sugar cookies & cake showing the variety of colored/patterned jockey silks & hats! Pink Pineapple also added a cool rose artwork to showcase the official Derby flower on their vanilla macaroons. Probably some of the coolest desserts I've ever seen!
Hannah Ruth has an impeccable eye for detail, as you'll see in the photos. She made our models feel comfortable and relaxed while capturing some amazing shots! Thanks boo! If you haven't worked with Hannah, you are missing out on a fun time! Her personality makes every event I do with her soooo much more FUN!!!
Husband & Wife, Gary & Jessica, were absolutely adorable! SO CUTE! S/O to them for being awesome! Who said y'all aren't real models?? NATURALS
&& my doggie, WHISKEY, made a cameo as well ;)
Flowers in the Forest wasn't able to be in attendance during the shoot but they provided the stunning red roses!
Whether you are hosting a Derby party this weekend or just want to drink a Mint Julip on your couch, we have everything to assist you.
